Undine shook her head sorrowfully, drew a deep sight, and then proceeded as follows:
"Our condition makes us very fair and lovely to behold for human beings; nevertheless, there's one evil peculiarity too: we, as other creatures alike, vanish into our essential element and pass away in body and spirit so that not a vestige of us remains behind. When you mortals hereafter awake to a purer life, we remain in the sand, or the sparks, or the wind, or the waves... hence, we have no souls. Merry as nightingales, little gold-fishes and other pretty children of nature we live without sorrows. But all things aspire to live a higher existence than the one they've been created for..."
